Simsbury, CT — Following an invitation from the Biology Department and HOSA student leaders at Simsbury High School, the Center for DNA-Guided Medicine (CDGM) delivered an interactive learning experience introducing students to real-world applications of molecular biology, laboratory medicine, and emerging careers in life sciences.

During the visit, students engaged in demonstrations highlighting how genetic testing, molecular diagnostics, and clinical laboratory workflows support modern healthcare and biomedical innovation. The session connected classroom biology concepts with authentic scientific practice, helping students understand how foundational knowledge translates into real professional pathways.

The experience emphasized experiential learning, student inquiry, and exposure to advanced laboratory environments — allowing participants to explore scientific thinking beyond traditional classroom instruction.

A Simsbury High School educator reflected on the impact of the experience:

“Mr. Kocherla’s presentation was truly inspiring for our students. Hearing from someone actively working in the field elevated the learning experience and gave students a clear roadmap for pursuing opportunities in science while still in high school.”

— Jeffrey Klein, Science Teacher, Simsbury High School

Faculty also expressed interest in offering similar sessions regularly due to the value of connecting classroom learning with authentic scientific practice.

Through guided discussion, demonstration of laboratory tools, and career pathway exploration, students gained insight into:

 The role of molecular diagnostics in healthcare

 How laboratory workflows operate in real clinical settings

 Skills required for careers in biotechnology, medicine, and research

 The value of early exposure to authentic scientific environments

This collaboration reflects CDGM’s ongoing mission to expand access to rigorous, hands-on STEM experiences for high school students across Connecticut and to help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world scientific practice.
